This week we go back thirty five years to 1983. If you were around then how much do you remember about that year?  In many ways the decade of the 80’s shaped what the future would hold throughout the world. So let’s take a look back and begin as we always do with the cost of living in 1983.

The average yearly income was $22,000 and the cost of a new 3 bedroom home averaged $89,000. You could buy a Ford Mustang for $6,600, but a gallon of gas had now climbed to the outrageous price of $1.24. Some food prices were a dozen eggs 86 cents,  a gallon of milk $1.75, Skippy Peanut Butter $1.29 and Kellogg’s Corn Flakes 99 cents. You could buy a Sony Walkman for $229 an RCA VCR player for $399, while an Atari 5200 game was $200. A pair of men’s leather shoes were under $40. In news headlines they included……former movie actor and California Governor Ronald Reagan was President. Unemployment in the U.S. rises to 12 million, the highest since 1941. The UK is the first country to make automobile seat belts mandatory. Terrorists bomb the US Embassy in Beirut killing 239 Marines and Sailors. The Supreme Court reaffirms its 1973 (Roe Vs Wade) right to abortion. Hurricane Alicia hits the Texas coast, killing 22, while a 5.2 earthquake hits Central New York. The first mobile phones are introduced by Motorola and Microsoft Word makes its debut. A new “no frills” budget airline, Peoples Express also makes its debut. Sally Ride becomes the first woman astronaut as part of the crew on the Space Shuttle Challenger.

In the world of entertainment among the top Hollywood films from 1983 were Tootsie, Flashdance, Trading Places, Superman III and National Lampoon’s Vacation. In the world of pop music hit makers included The Police, Black Sabbath, Johnny, Cash, David Bowie and Pink Floyd. When it came to TV Simon & Simon, Dynasty, Cagney and Lacy, Dallas, and The Love Boat were among the hit shows. Some of the celebrities we lost included famed football coach Bear Bryant, TV host/entertainer Arthur Godfrey, singer Karen Carpenter, actress Gloria Swanson, actor David Niven and former heavyweight boxing champ Jack Dempsey.

As for the porn industry, the switch from east coast to west coast was expanding. New technological advances and the coming of video will make porn a completely different industry. Some female stars are showing the new shaved look. 1983 also brought out some top notch porn films such as the one we take a look back at today, “Private Teacher”.

Private Teacher – Caballero Video – Director – Robert McCallum – Cast – Honey Wilder, Joanna Storm, Kay Parker, Laurie Smith, Janey Robbins, Tom Byron, Paul Thomas, Eric Edwards and Marc Wallice

This was another top shelf effort from Director Robert McCallum that was nominated for several awards with Tom Byron winning the Best Actor nod from the CAFA for his portrayal in the film. The premise is basically a coming of age story line about Jimmy (a very, very young Tom Byron) and how he keeps to himself, rather than being out with friends. But it is what Jimmy is doing while he stays in his room that is the crux of the story and what takes place.

Jimmy lives with his Aunt Diane (Honey Wilder) and the reason he spends so much time in his room is a simple one. He has a telescope that he is fascinated with. Not because he can look into space and see the stars, but because he can spy on two hot airline stewardesses (Joanna Storm, Laurie Smith) who live across the street. While they are unaware, Jimmy watches all of their sexual exploits through the telescope and whacks off to them. Aunt Diane is convinced Jimmy has some emotional problems, not aware of what is going on, and it is affecting his school work. So she hires a private tutor (Kay Parker) to come to the house and give Jimmy some private lessons. Little does Aunt Diane know what kind of lessons the private tutor will wind up giving Jimmy.

After Kay Parker arrives she soon discovers Jimmy’s real problem and decides it’s time she show him how the real thing is done. Of course young Jimmy thinks he’s in love with this older woman but she assures him they have no future and she is just giving him what he needs. After she leaves Jimmy is worn out from the encounter and falls asleep. Aunt Diane and a neighbor (Janey Robbins) go to his room to see how things went and see Jimmy asleep with a big hard on. Next thing you know Janie is sucking him and he awakes and wants to know what is going on and then comes the classic line from Janie, “You’re getting your dick sucked kid.

There is a lot more that takes place like a TV host (Eric Edwards) coming through the TV to bang Aunt Diane in a fantasy sequence, Paul Thomas in a bunny suit, some tin foil and a lot more craziness that adds into this story. Jimmy also gets another sexual awakening when he takes on the neighbor and his Aunt Diane. In all there are ten sex scenes in this film and they all have their moments of sizzle and heat and play well. While Ms. Wilder is in four of the scenes and the very hot Joanna Storm is in three, it was too bad that the fantastic Kay Parker only had the one scene. Still, there is plenty to get you boned in this fun, sexy film. Great camera work allowing for some eye catching visuals, excellent performances by the cast and good production values make this a true classic from the 80’s.

It is also great viewing of some of the top names from the time and seeing performers like Paul Thomas and Tom Byron, both still active today though behind the scenes and looking so very young back then. If you want a classic that is pure entertainment and enjoyment, then 1983’s “Private Teacher”, now available on DVD, is definitely worth getting hold of.
