About August McLaughlin:
August McLaughlin is a nationally recognized health and sexuality writer, creator of the female sexual empowering brand “Girl Boner,” and a radio personality. Her feature articles have appeared in DAME magazine, Legacy Series magazine, Sexual Wellness News, LIVESTRONG.com, SFGate Living (The San Francisco Chronicle), the Nest Woman, Healthy Aging magazine, and more. She was named Nutrition Writer of 2010 by LIVESTRONG.com, Editor’s Pick of 2010 by Demand Media Studios, and one of BlogHer’s Voices of the Year in 2014. Her first novel, “In Her Shadow,” a National Indie Excellence Award finalist, is loosely based on her experience with anorexia while working as an international model.
Since recovering from anorexia and years of body dysmorphia, McLaughlin has taught and mentored individuals with eating disorders and other psychological disorders on wellness and body image on an individual and group basis (LA Health Works, LuvUrSelf Fitness, Bridges to Recovery). She is the executive producer of “Weight Limit” – a series of body image-related PSAs – and speaks professionally to a variety of audiences, including high school and college students, artistic communities, and national and regional conference attendees, on body image, eating disorders, and media and societal influences on female sexuality.
Publicly known for melding personal passion with activism, McLaughlin uses her skills as a public speaker and journalist to inspire other women to embrace their bodies and sexuality, making way for fuller, more authentic lives. Even when she was deathly ill in Paris, more crippled by fear of fatness than death, she sensed that a purpose awaited her if she would simply hang on. That “light,” as she’s come to call it, has ignited and grown since “Girl Boner” was born. She is determined to use it to brighten the world.
