It was the decade of the 80’s and a lot of changes were taking place in our lives and around the world. What do you remember? Let’s take a look back thirty five years ago and see what 1985 brought our way.
As always we start with the cost of living. The average income was just $22,000 a year, a new 3 bedroom home averaged $89,000 and the average price of a new car was around $9,000. A gallon of gas had finally gone over the dollar mark at a $1.09 (and we thought that was outrageous!). You could a buy a Bean Bag lounger (remember those?) for just $40 and you could go to a movie for just $2.50. Women’s chemise dresses were in as was the insignia beret and for men the sweater vest was a big item. In some news headlines in 1985………….TWA Flight 847 is hijacked by Hezbollah on June 14th……In Malta Egypt Air flight 648 is hijacked and ends with the loss of 56 passengers during the commando raid to rescue them………..The Unabomber kills his first victim and Mafia boss Paul Castellano is shot on orders of John J. Gotti……….. In the UK, Live Aid pop concerts in London, as well as in Philadelphia raise over $50 million for famine relief in Ethiopia……… Insurance companies begin screening for AIDS for life insurance causing an outcry by civil liberties groups………. Microsoft Corporation releases the first version of Windows, Windows 1.0……. Coca Cola introduces the New Coke and it is a disaster and the original is back 6 months later………The music compact discs (CD’s) are introduced to American consumers and quickly become popular…… The Nintendo Entertainment System makes its debut……The space shuttle Atlantis is launched.
In the world of entertainment among the big Hollywood hit films were The Color Purple, Cocoon, Back to the Future and Out of Africa. In the music world hit makers included Dire Straits, Duran, Duran, Madonna and ” We Are The World ” By USA For Africa” featuring many artists. As for the hit TV shows they included Cheers, Dynasty, Miami Vice, Murder, She Wrote and Family Ties. In 1985 we lost many celebrities among them actor Yul Brynner, comedienne Selma Diamond, actor/director Orson Welles, baseball player Roger Maris, actor Rock Hudson and singer/actor Rick Nelson.
In adult, just about all production was now being done on the west coast. While the old look (natural breasts and bush) were still common, the new enhanced and clean shaven look began to take hold. New technical advances with equipment and cameras bring major changes to the style of filming. One of the year’s top adult films is the one we look back at today “Stiff Competition”.

This was a film that had everything. Crisp writing, good humor, some dramatic moments and excellent mainstream styled acting by much of the cast. It also had great settings, production values along with a good story line and of course some very steamy sex scenes.
The story is about what takes place in a boxing ring, but these are not about boxing matches. It all revolves around a grand prize of $50,000 for the great “Suck Off Super Bowl Championship” competition. Yep, a blow job competition! The film opens when a tuxedoed sugar daddy brings his sexy date Tammy (Jenna Carrera) to an underground club where there is a cock sucking contest taking place. Bets are placed and the contest begins as The Mouth (Susan Hart) starts working on her male contestant but her manager (Kevin James) gets her angry, She stops sucking the guy, quits and runs out of the building. Now the crowd is very upset wanting their money back. But Tammy decides to jump in and take over and continue the suck off with the guy. Of course she gets him off in less than the allotted time and Kevin finds a new “star” for the upcoming championship.
In the meantime Mouth calls her friend Cynthia Silkthroat (Cyndee Summer), last year’s champ about this new girl. Cynthia decides to come out of retirement, get in shape and enter the championships and defend her title. Her manager/boyfriend Jake the Snake (John Leslie) gets her in a training mode. The girl Cynthia defeated, Linda Lonestar (Brigette Monet), is also returning. Tammy is given the name of Tammy the Tongue. She works out, goes to a swinger’s club and meets up with Patty Cakes (Patti Wright) another entry in the championships. There is a lot of under the table dealings that take place as the promoter Don Head (Ron Jeremy) is bribed and coerced into throwing the championships, but he won’t go for it. There is a lot that goes on throughout with some good dramatic moments and some very funny ones as well.
When it comes time for the championship rounds to begin, it takes place in a real dingy arena. The ring is complete with handlers, seconds and a big cheering crowd. It is even watched at the bars on cable TV. There is a hilarious scene where an older family at home is watching on TV. Promoter Head introduces the combatants in this suck off championship and then the games begin! Doing the play by play at ringside is an uncredited Paul Thomas and his Howard Cosell like commentary is funny stuff. As for the male cocks the girls have to work on, you’ll recognize a couple of the guys in their very early days, particularly Tom Byron who looks like he’s about 14 and Peter North whose bombastic pop shots were legend even in the beginning. So now the championships begin, the crowd is cheering and hollering and the girls are doing their best to advance to the championship round and win the 50 grand. There is one funny scene here when Linda’s manager (Dave Cannon) is frustrated that she can’t get the guy off that he jumps in, shoves the guy away and takes his place. Of course when all is said and done, the new girl Tammy the Tongue comes out as the winner and champion much to the dismay of the former champ.
As for the sex in the film, of course it centers around a lot of fantastic oral performances, but there is a lot more. There is a cute girl/girl scene and a couple of anal sex scenes that pack some good punch. But if you are a fan of oral sex (who isn’t?) you’ll love this one. The production, settings, writing, story line and superb acting pull this film together in a nice entertaining package. Another fun part of this film is seeing a younger, slimmer, in shape Ron Jeremy and his huge member getting worked on. You also get to see in uncredited roles, new young future stars like Byron, North, Thomas and Kristara Barrington. If you can find this film which is available in DVD please do. “Stiff Competition” is another of those very well made films from the 1980’s that flies under the radar but deserves its place as a golden oldie classic of porn.
