As we all get older it just seems like time flies by much faster. It is 50-55 years since we came into the 70’s, another of those “where has the time gone?” periods in life. As a fun reminder of that period in times here are some of highs and lows that took place during the 1970’s.

The 70’s was the decade of disco! This new genre of music – evolving from soul and dance music. Sadly, disco famously “died” some time ago, but its influence is still felt in much of today’s music.

In 1975, the world would undergo a change that has kept on changing and evolving. That was the year the Paul Allen and Bill Gates introduced the world to Microsoft and is notable for helping make computers personal. Microsoft  would setg the standard for home and work computing all over the world.

Later in the 70’s, 1978 to be exact, Jim Davis introduced “Garfield” to newspapers. With it, a pop culture icon would emerge. The fat orange cat became a merchandising bonanza with video games and various merchandise plus the comic strips still run to this day.

1970 saw the resounding election of Richard Nixon as US President. Towards the middle of the decade, he’d be embroiled in the Watergate scandal. As it transpired, Nixon and several of his White House allies had helped to cover up the scandal. Nixon resigned as a result under a cloud of controversy.

On August 16th, 1977, Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n’ Roll, passed away, leaving behind a colossal musical legacy. He was just 42 at the time of his passing and to this day, he is regarded as one of the most influential pop music heroes of the 20th century.

In 1973, the twin towers opened, known as the World Trade center, in New York City. It would be, at the time, the tallest buildings in the world. They would be destroyed in 2001, as the towers were brought down during the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks.

In March 1972, ‘The Godfather’ was released in cinemas – and it’s still regarded as one of the finest motion pictures ever produced. It would be the beginning of a major movie craze in the 70’s.

It was the 70’s that also gave birth to the porn industry and films like “Deep Throat”, Behind the Green Door” and “The Devil and Miss Jones” were being shown to jam packed mainstream movie theater. It was the beginning of the golden age of porn. It has, over the years, become a billion dollar industry that is still going strong.

Among the top TV shows of the 70’s were All in the Family, M*A*S*H, The Carol Burnett Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Three’s Company, Charlie’s Angels, Dallas, Kojak and The Muppet Show.

Some of the notable people we lost in the 70’s aside from Elvis were Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, John Wayne, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Lyndon B. Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, Joan Crawford, J. Edgar Hoover, Rod Serling, Bing Crosby and so many more.

There were also some very well known people born in the 70’s like Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Elon Musk, Kobe Bryant, John Cena, Shaquille O’ Neal, Ron DeSantis, Taylor Sheridan, Melania Trump, Andre Agassi and more.

There is so much more that were part of the ever changing 1970’s.
